Shrub, stems to 5 m tall. Frequent in cotone between longleaf pine flatwoods and titi swamp, in part that periodically burns; substrate wet but without standing water; along forst road 313, W of Crawfordville, in the Apalachicola National Forest.

In deep woods Chinquapin Plantation, Grady County.

Birdsong Nature Center, Meridian Road about 5 miles SW of Beachton. Along branch below Big Pond overstory mostly bay trees - few plants.

Common in wet hammock, often in shallow pools, along the Wacissa River.
